Biography

From an early age Matt knew he wanted to be a part of the music industry- By the age of four he was playing the violin and by sixteen was an expert on the double bass.

Matt started his career as an apprentice at Air Studios and was determined to make a go of what he now says is a vocation not a job. One of his first ever sessions was with Alan Winstanley and Clive Langer for Elvis Costello.

During his 18 years of recording experience, Matt has had the opportunity to work with and learn from a wealth of production and engineering talent including Bob Clearmountain, George Martin, Phil Ramone, Chris Kimsey, Jon Kelly, Rupert Hine, Glyn Johns, Bill Price, Shawn Murphy and Chris Thomas.

He had been at Metropolis for ten years and has since been freelancing. His experience in the studio has enabled him to record full symphony orchestra sessions to tracklaying with loud rock and roll bands Matt recorded and mixed the score for Bernardo Bertolucci's picture The Sheltering Sky with composer Riyuichi Sakamoto which won the Golden Globe and L.A. Critics' awards for best music soundtrack of 1990. Matt has also worked on many other film music projects including James Horner's compositions for "Legends of the Fall", "Willow", "Apollo 13" and John Barry's "Chaplin" and "Moviola".

Matt won Category 2 Best Album of the Year at the Grammy's with Lauryn Hill's The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill, beating Madonna, Sheryl Crow, Garbage and Shania Twain.

Being the most prestigious award the 'Best Album of the Year' was the last one of the evening to be awarded and even though Lauryn Hill was joint favourite with Madonna, it still came as a real surprise to Matt.

Since winning at the 41st Annual Grammy of February 1999, Matt has triumphed with multiple successes including 3 Westlife albums and 8 number one singles with multi-platinum or gold sales recognition for the following artists:

Boyzone "You Needed Me" & "When The Going Gets Tough"

Westlife "Flying Without Wings", "Against All Odds", "Queen Of My Heart" & "Swear It Again"

    Five "Keep On Movin"

    O-Town "All Or Nothing"

Going freelance has been great for Matt; we anticipate that 2002 will be even better.
